CHAMBLEE 101 – CLASS 6

Once again, the Mayor and City Council will sponsor a 6-week course designed to increase the number of informed and involved citizens in the City and to connect our citizens with their government.
The course will be offered April13 through May 17, 2011. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with the exception of the last week. For the last session the class will attend the City Council Meeting on May17th where certificates will be presented to all participants. The other five two-hour sessions will focus on the following:
April 13th - Form of Government and Administration: At City Hall the City Manager, will lead a presentation on the city charter, the city manager form of government, open meetings/records laws, review the mission/vision statement, and review the budget. Nancy Williams, City Clerk, will discuss administrative department duties such as tax and license billing and collection. Participants will be invited to tour City Hall and participate in a question/answer session with Mayor Clarkson and City Council members, Mark Wedge, Leslie Robson, Tom Hogan, Scott Taylor and Dan Zanger.
April 20th – Development Department and Parks & Recreation: Dan Schultz, Development Director, will brief the participants on future planning and zoning efforts, building codes and the process and requirements for obtaining permits.
There will be a discussion of recreation programs as well as park facilities. Discussions will be lead by: Joel Holmes, Parks & Recreation Director and Jennifer Rackley, Recreation Coordinator. From City Hall there will be a bus tour of some of the major re-development sites as well as all city parks.
April 27th - Public Works: Tillman Hannon, Public Works Director, will provide an explanation of various functions of the department including sanitation, recycling, right-of-way cleaning, sidewalk construction, animal control and storm water along with some services unique to Chamblee such as street sweeping and the leaf machine. Participants will be invited to tour the Public Works facility.
May 4nd & 11th – Police, 911 & Court (2 weeks): Discussions will be led by Marc Johnson, Chief of Police, and other members of the command staff. The different divisions, department duties, mission and organizational structure as well as code enforcement and emergency preparedness are among the topics that will be discussed. Court procedures and what cases are tried in City Court will also be discussed. A tour of police department, including the 911 and detention centers, is included along with demonstrations of equipment and tools.
Certificates will be awarded to all participants at the regular monthly meeting of the City Council on May17, 2011.
