A City on the Right Track

Recycling

Recycling is citywide in Chamblee. This section does a great deal for the City. Not only does recycling reduce the cost of the City's landfill bill each year but helps keep our landfills from filling up and promotes the reuse of certain materials which also saves energy. Our department has one of the highest annual recycle totals in the state. On average, we usually recycle 40% of every thing thrown away in Chamblee.

The City recycles aluminum cans, glass bottles, glass jars, #1 and #2 plastics, beverage bottles, bi-metal cans, newspapers, and magazines at the curb once per week. Recycling bins are available through Public Works with a $5.00 refundable deposit.

Containers that have been used for paint, solvents, oils, etc. must be dry and without lids or caps in order to be picked up. If liquid remains in the containers that you wish to dispose of, remove the lid or cap and fill the container with dirt, sand, sawdust, etc., to solidify the contents. After a few days, the mixture should be dry enough to place at curbside for pick up on your regularly scheduled day.

Automobile batteries and certain appliances are also recyclable. However, any unit containing coolant (ex: refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, etc.) requires special handling through the Environmental Protection Division. There is a $14.00 charge per unit. Call Public Works to schedule a pick up.

**Please note that there are certain household hazardous products that the City cannot recycle. Household hazardous waste products are any products containing hazardous substances such as solvents, batteries (AA, AAA, C, and D), automobile fluids, herbicides, pesticides, and degreasers. Any type of drum, cylinder, canister, etc., that has or had contained flammable or combustible liquids or materials cannot be recycled. If you need to find a recycling/disposal location for aerosol cans, household and yard insecticides, solvents or other such products and containers, please go to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources website at www.p2ad.org/hhwguide.html. This site lists all recycling centers, and if the product is not recyclable or does not have a recycling program available locally, the "last resort" disposal option is also given.**
