Public Works
The Public Works Department provides refuse collection and disposal services, a litter collection program, recycling services, street cleaning and right of way maintenance, building maintenance, vehicle and motorized equipment maintenance, storm water system maintenance, and animal control services.
Beginning in January of 2006, the Public Works Department began working a 4 day work week. The department operates Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. They are closed on Wednesday. An emergency crew is on call after hours. Right of way cleaning takes a three man crew, mowing and trimming grass on the right of ways. This crew also picks up paper and debris from roadways.
Construction and Repair
Many repair projects in City parks (simple building repairs, stone work, crosstie walls, stonewalls, tree removal, and repairing and/or installing new sidewalks) are done by Public Works. They also enhance the parks with special building projects (ex: the train the children play on at Huntley Hills Park or the fire truck and bridge at Keswick Park).
Sidewalks and Curbs
Grade, form, pour, install, and landscape new sidewalks. Repair or remove old broken sidewalks when reported, and curb raising.
Banner and Street Signs
Install new City signage and change 80 seasonal banners four times a year. Put up and take down variance and zoning signs, City limit signs, and parking signs. Graffiti removal and/or cleaning are done on City streets, walls, signs, buildings, etc.
Vehicle Maintenance
Simple repairs and maintenance on all City vehicles, trucks, police cars, mowers, weed eaters, generators, tractors, and trailers are done in-house by the Public Works vehicle technician.
Building Maintenance
Perform everyday maintenance on all City buildings (ex: gutter cleaning, painting, pressure wash side walks, pressure wash jail cells, light plumbing, changing light fixtures, etc.)
