Administrative Division
The Administrative Division is comprised of the Communications and Detention Section, Records Section and Criminal History Section. It is commanded by a Division Commander who is also a sworn Police Lieutenant.
Communications Section
The Communications Section is staffed by 2 supervisors and 11 communication officers.
The Communications Center operates a state-of-the-art enhanced 911 Public Safety Answering Point. They answer all 911 and other emergency calls made from within or to the City of Chamblee. The Positron 911 equipment used in the center is Wireless Phase II compliant which means that in addition to being able to receive a cell phone caller's phone number, it is also able to receive the approximate X, Y (longitude, latitude) location of the handset making the call. This approximate location is then automatically plotted in a computerized mapping system. Because of the tremendous diversity in the City, language barriers are overcome using Language Line Services which provides online translation services.
VisionAIR's Computer Aided Dispatch software is used to facilitate the call handling and record keeping functions of the center. It also allows the calls and other information to be sent wirelessly to the laptop computers in the patrol vehicles allowing the officers in the field to have immediate access to all the information that the dispatchers have access to.
The center dispatches all police calls for the City of Chamblee. Fire and emergency medical services are provided in Chamblee by DeKalb County Fire and Rescue. Any calls for these services are transferred to the DeKalb County 911 Center which dispatches for them.
Detention Center
The police department operates a 26 bed short-term detention center. It is located in the police building adjacent to the communications center. The communications officers are responsible for monitoring the detention center and assuring the well being of the prisoners. This is done primarily by CCTV and intercoms. However, because of this added responsibility, the communication officers are all cross trained and state certified as jail officers.
Records Section
The records section is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and is staffed by a supervisor and two records clerks.
They are responsible for all of the record keeping functions of the department. Besides entering data into various computer data bases, they scan all paper records and documents into a computerized optical imaging system which allows for long term storage without the need to keep the paper records. They also serve as the initial contact for the walk-in public, answer the non-emergency phone calls, accept payments for fines and process criminal history record checks. From 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. they issue Alcohol Handling Permits, Taxi Driver Permits and do applicant fingerprinting.
Criminal History Section
The Criminal History Section is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and is staffed by two full-time supervisors and approximately 20 part-time clerks.
They process criminal history record checks which are requested by employers, landlords, child care providers, etc., using the arrest records maintained by the Georgia Crime Information Center These checks are provided pursuant to Georgia Law which allows the dissemination of this information with the consent of the person whose record is being checked.
