Building Permits
Types of Permits Required
Generally, permits are required for all building (structural - interior or exterior) and land disturbance activities - residential and commercial, as well as for towers, demolition, electrical work, low voltage wiring, grading and site development, heating and air conditioning, plumbing and tree removal. All interior and exterior structural changes or expansions/additions must be permitted along with all commercial accessory buildings normally appurtenant to a development and residential accessory structures such as: sheds, decks, porches, patio rooms, detached garages, swimming pools and greenhouses. Permits are required for installation, alteration or replacement of any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system which is regulated by technical Codes adopted by the City of Chamblee.
Note: All new construction, major redevelopment/renovation and expansion of existing structures must be approved for zoning and site development prior to permitting. Contact the City Development Director for information, application forms, instructions and schedules.
Permit Application Forms
Permit applications must be submitted on original, multi-page and numbered forms obtained from the Permits & Inspections Department. Contractors must provide copies of current State certification, company business license and liability insurance with the application form. Review the permit instructions for plan submittal requirements. Upon approval of plans and application, payment of the permit fees is accepted by cash or check only. We can not accept credit card payments at this time.
Permitting Hours
Permit can be obtained Monday through Friday, from 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
Building Regulations
Chapter 18 of the Codes & Ordinances of the City of Chamblee provides regulations regarding the display of addresses on a job site, preliminary inspections for building damages, recourse for denial of permits, expiration of permits, property maintenance, demolition, unsafe structures, enforcement, appeals, notice of violations, inspections, Certificates of Occupancy, stop work orders, standards for dwelling units and requirements for construction/maintenance of telecommunications antennae and towers.
Currently Adopted Building Codes
The City of Chamblee has adopted the Georgia State Minimum Standard Codes with all Georgia Amendments as adopted by the Department of Community Affairs for the State of Georgia.

* Note: The Department of Community Affairs Board specifically omitted the plumbing and electrical requirements of the International Residential Code for One- and Two-Family Dwellings. Therefore, the plumbing requirements of the International Plumbing Code (2006) and the electrical requirements of the National Electrical Code (2005) must be used for one and two-family dwelling construction.
