The City of Chamblee has decided to postpone its 2018 Capital Paving Program. City staff recently became aware of DeKalb County’s award of three major sewer repair projects in the city. The county will be repairing or replacing sewer lines in the Kewsick, Huntley Hills and DECA areas. The contracts require the work be completed by December 2020. This information was not available during the original planning for our 2018 road resurfacing projects. After several meetings with the DeKalb County Watershed Department, we feel it’s best to postpone our Capital Paving Program to be responsible stewards of our taxpayers’ money.
Our next step is to meet with county contractors to determine how we can collaborate to accomplish the sewer repairs together. We also will assess the paving list and determine how we can incorporate areas that are not affected by sewer work into the paving list in 2019. Most importantly, the city is not in any danger of losing funding for road repairs if road resurfacing projects are suspended while the county is handling the sewer repairs, and we will continue to repair potholes, curbs and gutters.
